Matchbox is an Open Source base environment for the X Window System running on non-desktop embedded platforms such as handhelds, set-top boxes, kiosks andother things which screen space, input mechanisms or system resources are limited.

Matchbox is a series of interchangeable and optional applications that can be tailored to a specific non desktop platform to enhance the usability of a ”limited” environment.

The central and most advanced program is a window manager with a classic stackbased PDA like management policy. It supports modern window management standards, groundbreaking X, advanced themeing and various types of windows.

Other Matchbox uses include a panel (with many example Java applets), a PDAstyle desktop launcher, a shared utility library, software input mechanisms, and more.

All Matchbox applications are designed to be fast, easy and flexible. They are nottied to any GUI toolkit with all dependencies checked at build time.
